The Bat Cave

June 12, 2017

Has anyone heard of this secret restaurant, The Bat Cave? Alright I know it's not called The Bat Cave but could this be talking about the 'underground dinner club' called the Cheshire Dinner Society.

It has been mentioned in the Southpark Magazine, Creative Loafing, and this blog.

On second thought, the price range thing doesn't add up to be the #1 most expensive in Charlotte... But I did the research so I'll leave it here in case anyone is interested. I think that they are talking about The Haunt Bar, a friend of ours will be having her wedding there this July! And I have heard that the food is simply amazing.

Places To Camp In North Carolina

June 10, 2017

I have camped at Pisgah a couple of times. I love it, but it is the forest primeval. Gorgeous and wild. There are campgrounds with amenities, and there are rougher areas. Pisgah National Forest is one of my favorite camp areas. It's so beautiful and peaceful.

If you are up that way, try Sliding Rock. It's tons of fun.

The thing with Pisgah is that the sites are pretty small but you're right next to the best hiking on that stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The BRP is under construction around that area until the spring, so be sure to keep an eye on that. I plan to go back soon. I hiked out of Carvers Gap. Looks like good camping up there as well.

For a short hike in with a hike loop I'd recommend John Rock. Panthertown Valley is an incredible place. Shining Rock Wilderness is awesome but was closed to camping last year due to bears. I'd also look into Jones Gap State Park - it's just over the state line in SC.

We get a lot of rain during the spring. So if you choose the mountains, check the weather first. There is also primitive camping at Graveyard Fields, but it's been closed this year due to the bear activity (lots of blueberry bushes there). There is a restroom at the parking lot at Graveyard Fields, but no showers. There are also a lot of hikers in the area so you may have to hike in a ways to get some privacy.

Anywhere above the main loops should be good.

Swimming to School

June 9, 2017

Heh. I remember when I was a student at UNCW. Flooding in Wilmington is a common occurrence. Especially in April-May and August-September.

I can't tell you the number of times I walked to my morning and afternoon classes barefoot with water half way up to my knees. And yet if we got the slightest bit of snow. Well, all hell would break loose. It's what happens when there are a few thousand boats but only two snowplows.

Image description

On top of that, if a light snow isn't enought to throw things into chaos you end up with road closures with no detour signs. How was I supposed to know that part of Atlantic AND wake forest road was closed? By turning around both times.

But it really depends on where you are. In my sister's county they already put out a delay. Supposedly where we are it's going to flooding.

'Brunch Bill' wins Senate Approval

June 7, 2017

I don't understand imposing your values on everyone else. Everyone else has to wait for the christian rites? Crazy. This means that Alcohol sales at restaurants starting at 10AM. I am talking about the 'Brunch Bill.'

"Surely, we can wait to start serving drinks until after the preacher has said the benediction."

If we're in Church... Sure.

But there's no preacher at my brunch though, so I'm not sure why that's a concern.

Your average churchgoing crowd isn't going to stop going to church just because you can order drinks in restaurants. If you think an extra 2 hours of booze is going to lose your congregation, you're just a shitty preacher who needs to work harder.

But Rev. Mark Creech, executive director of the Christian Action League, urged senators to defeat the measure, saying it poses a danger to public health and undermines the state's control system for liquor.
Calling the Sunday sales provision "sensitive to business interests but insensitive to churches," Creech argued, "Surely, we can wait to start serving drinks until after the preacher has said the benediction."

Separation of church and state please. 10am is nice but the whole restriction needs to be lifted because it's completely unconstitutional.

The Corner Kitchen

June 7, 2017

When I hear talk of slightly formal celebrations I always think of the Corner Kitchen. It is perfect for this type of thing. And in my oninion an A recommendation. I had my bridal brunch there a few years back. They were very accommodating and had everything ready on time. We didn't have a separate room but had our own space upstairs away from the crowds. It's an adorable house and the food is so good!

It is one of those places where you realize why you live in NC. It is just that friendly and they really go out of their way to make sure your experience is perfect.
